16 Bars Project
I spent three years researching and visiting prisons, prisoners and ex-prisoners across Germany. I did this because I wanted to understand what happens to a person when they have their physical freedom taken away from them and what the stigma prison does once you are released. What I learnt was far more than that, spanning from education and medical support inside the so called correctional facilities (or the lack of) to chances it can hold.
This is a portrait photo series of the people that I met and their stories.
